Britta Höschele – Curriculum Vitae

Britta Höschele was born in Stuttgart in 1965. After graduating from secondary school she studied horticulture for three years. Until 1990 she worked in a number of nurseries in the Stuttgart and Munich areas, gaining a wealth of experience in designing and landscaping ornamental gardens. In 1990 she moved to Ljubljana with her husband-to-be. After the birth of their son a year later, she became increasingly involved in children's illustrating and working with children. She led several creative workshops for children and published a book and a calendar of children's crafts. During this period, she also illustrated a children's book and contributed illustrations to the children's magazine CICIBAN as well as special editions for the Red Cross of Slovenia. In 1997 she moved with her family to the village of Kobdilj (Štanjel) in the Slovene Karst region. At first she devoted herself primarily to the challenging task of restoring an old farmhouse and old furniture, and putting in a submediterranean-style garden. More recently, she has worked as a self-taught artist, in painting and printmaking as well as children's illustrating. She likes to collect a variety of natural materials, and strives to optimally convey the artistic beauty of an object by selecting and using appropriate techniques of presentation. This might be a two-dimensional canvas, a sculpture, or in the form of suspended pieces of art. In printmaking, she primarily uses steel engraving and linoleum cuts. Her works often reflect abstract as well as still life motifs drawn from the rich cultural and natural heritage of the Karst—stone window frames, decorative details from stone archways, grapevines, and so on. To date she has had five solo exhibitions of her artistic works and children's illustrations: an exhibition of collages using natural materials in the Tower in Štanjel in 2002, an exhibition of prints in Kabüsa, Sweden in 2003, and exhibitions of children's illustrations in Štanjel, Ajdovščina and Komen in 2002 and 2003. In 2004 and 2005 she participated in a number of group exhibitions in the Karst and the wider Primorska region. In 2006 she had a solo exhibition on the island of Tjurkö (Karlskrona) in Sweden.

In 2004 she and her husband opened up an art gallery and ornamental garden. Since 2005 she has been guiding weekly arts and crafts workshops for pupils from the 1st to the 6th class and comic workshops at the elementary schools of Štanjel and Komen. Since 2010 she has been guiding individual art courses for holiday guests. She is the mother of a twenty-four-year-old son and a seventeen-year-old daughter.
